Claire running for hope

I will run the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on the 16th of October, and I would like to use the occasion to raise money and awareness for The Hope Exchange and the work they do with our city’s homeless community.

Over the past few weeks of training, I have been able to experience both the beauty and the hardships that the mother city has to offer. Every run I’ve been on I’ve marvelled at the incredible scenery and views we are so lucky to experience on an almost daily basis. Unfortunately, alongside the beauty, there is a hardship. I have passed through areas of the city that are dilapidated and run down. Passing through the side streets and along the highways, people are trying to get by with the bare minimum. At the start of my training, mornings were often cold and rainy yet I would pass people sleeping in storefronts with no protection nor warmth to get them through the night.

But what I have also passed on my runs, is The Hope Exchange, and I have learned about this NPO’s holistic approach to homelessness.

Hope starts with dignity and The Hope Exchange gives them the ability to be respected for who they are, to be acknowledged and not dismissed. They provide the homeless (their clients) the opportunity to wash, clean their clothes, get a meal, get clinic care and multiple ways of social support. These services give the clients the confidence to face the world with dignity in an effort to change their lives – a journey The Hope Exchange assist them with.

In the past 12 months, the organisation managed to reunify or reintegrate more than 60 clients.
